Black Pain and the Black Price Tag

The War on Drugs and Us: Time for An Exit Strategy

For decades, the governments of our country has waged war against its Black citizens in a profit-driven strategy which they call “ the war on drugs”. This strategy serves to meet the demand for occupants in the mega expansion of the prison industrial complex which provides the surge in profits to private prison developers and near-by industries for a stream of government revenue and cheap labor, building the local population census count to boost increased government representation and community development funds.  The support for the argument that the  “war on drugs” is a scam on the American people.

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP) represents police, prosecutors, judges, FBI/DEA agents, U.S. marshals and others who want to legalize and regulate drugs after fighting on the front lines of the "war on drugs" and learning firsthand that prohibition only serves to worsen addiction and violence. Their experience on the front lines of the “war on drugs” has led us to call for a repeal of prohibition and its replacement with a tight system of legalized regulation, which will effectively cripple the violent cartels and street dealers who control the current illegal market.

The war on drugs has put blacks behind bars for drug offenses at more than ten times the rate of whites, even though the evidence consistently shows that blacks are no more likely to use or sell currently illicit drugs than whites are,” Fogg added. “It is time to end this virtual race war.”

The new Ken Burns PBS documentary, “ Prohibition”  about alcohol prohibition  provides the American public an important lesson for today's prohibition on marijuana and other illegal drugs. Many current and former elected officials are calling for a re-evaluation of the "war on drugs" and a growing number are even suggesting that marijuana and other drugs should be legalized.

Tonight, we welcome LEAP Executive Director, and former MD State and Baltimore Police officer, Neill Franklin and James Gierach, a LEAP Board member and former Chicago Prosecutor in a return visit to OUR COMMON GROUND.
